The Khonds ate fruits and roots collected from the forest and cooked food with the oil they extracted from the seeds of the sal and mahua trees. The Khonds were tribal groups from Orissa that subsisted on hunting and gathering for food. For them, forests were vital to survival. They regularly conducted group hunts in the forests and then divided the meat among themselves. They sold forest produce in the neighbourhood markets and used a variety of forest shrubs and herbs for medicinal purposes.
