The Khonds lived in the forests of Orissa. Tribals frequently relied on animal hunting and looking for food in the forests. For them, forests were vital to survival. One such tribe was the Khonds. They did group hunts regularly and then split the meat among themselves. They cooked using the oil they extracted from the sal and mahua seeds and consumed fruits and roots they had taken from the forest. In addition, they sold forest goods in the neighbourhood markets and used various forest plants and herbs for medicinal purposes.
