The knowledge of ancient texts helped the reformers to promote new laws. Many reformers used ancient texts as the base of their movement. The practice of burning widowed women on the funeral pyre of their husbands was known as Sati. This was abolished as a result of the movement led by Raja Ram Mohan Roy. He was a well-educated man. He showed the people that the practice of widow burning has no sanction in any of the standard ancient texts. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar also used ancient texts to suggest that widows could remarry. British officials adopted his suggestions and the law was passed in 1856 which permitted widows to remarry. Some of the people opposed Vidyasagar. The later reforms also used ancient texts. The reformers tried to find a verse or sentence from the text to support their point.
