A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) called Narmada Bachao Andolan, also known as the Save Narmada Movement, organised tribal members, farmers, environmentalists, and human rights advocates to protest the Sardar Sarovar Dam being constructed in Gujarat across the Narmada River. The original emphasis was on the environmental concerns of the trees that the dam water would flood. However, the goal of enabling underprivileged residents, particularly the oustees (displaced people), to get complete rehabilitation facilities from the government has recently been refocused.
