Detailed Solution

The land that becomes unfit for cultivation is known as wasteland.
These include degraded forests, marshlands, hilly regions, polluted lands, and barren lands. The quest for increased agricultural productivity has led to intensive cultivation of marginal lands leading to their degradation. Wastelands are generally used for non-agricultural purposes like highways, railways, dump yards, etc. 17% of the geographical area of India comprises wastelands, with Jammu and Kashmir having the largest wastelands. Efforts are being made to restore fertility in these lands. The Indian government would launch a new initiative on wasteland development to channelise more significant resources to this area through the involvement of financial institutions.
