The land was called Iqta, and the landholder was called Muqti.
The Khalji and Tughluq appointed military commanders to govern territories of different sizes. Duties like conducting military campaigns and maintaining law and order in their assigned iqtas were assigned to Muqtis. In return for their military service, the Muqtis collected the revenue as the salary of their assignments. From this salary only they used to pay their soldiers also. Control over the Muqtis was only possible when they were not allowed inheritable offices, and iqtas were assigned to them only for a shorter period. These harsh conditions were imposed during the time of Khilji and Tughlaqs.
