Detailed Solution

The languages spoken by the common people in Sri Lanka are Sinhala and Tamil. The South Asian country of Sri Lanka gained its independence from the British in 1948. Its population consists of two major language groups, i.e., Sinhala speakers and Tamil speakers. Most of the Sinhala speakers are Buddhists and native to the island. Hence, the Sinhala speakers form a majority community. On the other hand, Tamil speakers are either Hindus or Muslims. A lot of them had migrated to the island from the southern parts of India. The Sinhala leaders tried to impose their language on the country's entire population in the 1950s and were met with fierce criticism. The tensions eventually escalated into a civil war.
