Detailed Solution

The large intestine has three parts - colon, cecum, and rectum. It is the long and wide tube lying after the small intestine where most water is absorbed back into the body. The final part of the large intestine, the rectum, opens into the anal canal (anus). The bacteria found in the large intestine are responsible for the fermentation of undigested food before it gets expelled through the anus. The cecum has a small extension, named the appendix (vermiform), a vestigial organ home to several bacteria useful to the human body. The colon can be ascending, descending, transverse, and sigmoid colons.
