Geospatial surveying commenced in 1946, and construction began in 1971. In 1988, the tunnel's construction was finished and it was inaugurated. A segment of the 53.85 km long Seikan rail that is 23.3 km long is submerged. Thus, it is the longest underwater tunnel in the world. It is also the second-deepest and second-longest main-line railway tunnel in the world.
