Detailed Solution

The law makes it compulsory for police to file an FIR in case of a Cognizable offence.
It is only after the filing of an FIR that the police can start an investigation into the case. According to the law, it is mandatory for an officer in charge of the police station to file an FIR whenever a person gives information about a cognizable offence. A cognizable offence is one for which a police officer may arrest without a warrant by the First Schedule or any other law at the time. Most cognizable crimes are serious.
