Newton's first law states that a body remains in its state of rest or uniform motion unless an external unbalanced force is acted upon it. The tendency of the body to stay at rest is called the inertia of rest, and the tendency of the body to remain in the state of motion is called inertia of motion. So, Newton's first law is also called the law of inertia.
