Johannes Kepler gave three laws for the planetary motion: the law of orbits, the law of areas, and the law of periods. The law of periods relates the orbital revolution of a planet to the time period of its revolution. According to the law of periods, "the cube of the mean distance of a planet from the sun is proportional to the square of its orbital period." The law can be formulated as follows:
