Maximilian Robespierre was the leader of the Jacobins, who formed France's less prosperous section of society. Jacobins mainly included small shopkeepers, artisans, shoemakers, pastry cooks, printers, watchmakers, servants, and daily wage earners. They got their name from the former St. Jacob in Paris and used to wear long striped trousers similar to that of dock workers. They did so to set themselves apart from the high-class fashionable society, especially from that of high-class nobles who used to wear knee breeches. Jacobins believed in men's rights, particularly preserving rights to liberty, security, property, and resistance to oppression.
