The local self-government for the rural area is called Panchayati Raj system.
The constitutional amendments of 1992 provided the constitutional status for the local governments in India. A three-tiered hierarchical system was introduced for the rural areas. It was called the Panchayati Raj System. At the village level, gram panchayats were established. At the block level, which was a collection of a few villages, Panchayat Samitis came into existence. The district became the highest level. At this level, the Zila Parishad was formed. Provisions were put in place to ensure the reservation of seats for SCs, STs, OBCs and women. The state governments were directed to transfer powers and divert funds to the local governments.
