Detailed Solution

The loss of cattle destroyed livelihoods of Africans. In the late 1880s, Rinderpest made its way to Africa. Infected cattle supplied from British Asia were used to feed Italian troops assaulting Eritrea in East Africa. Rinderpest entered Africa from the east and spread west like a forest fire, reaching Africa's Atlantic coast in 1892. It took five years to reach Cape (Africa's southernmost tip). Roughly 90% of the cattle were killed by rinderpest along the journey. Africa's livelihoods were ruined by the loss of cattle. Planters, mine owners, and colonial governments now have a monopoly on the few remaining livestock resources, allowing them to consolidate their control and compel Africans into the labour market.
