The Congress and the Muslim League reached a compromise known as the Lucknow Pact during a combined meeting held in Lucknow in 1916. The Lucknow Pact created the appearance of Hindu and Muslim political harmony in the country. However, it was simply a transient impression. The parties' agreement to have a distinct electorate for each community gave rise to communal politics in India. By signing this agreement, the INC also implied that it recognised the existence of two specific groups in India, each with its interests. Thus, together with the Congress Party, this partnership propelled the Muslim League, which had hitherto been less significant, to the fore of Indian politics.
