Detailed Solution

Object distance, u1 = -30 cm (The object distance is always taken as negative.)
Magnification, m1 = 1/2
Magnification, m2 = 1/4
Object distance, u2  =?

Magnification is given by the negative ratio of image distance to object distance.

Magnification = -Image distance Object distance=-vu

For magnification, m1 = 1/2

12=-v1-30

v1=302=15 cm

Mirror formula: 1f=1v+1u

1f=115+1(-30)= 130

f= 30 cm

For magnification, m2 = 1/4

14=-v2u2

v2=-u24

Substituting in the mirror formula, we get,
130=1-u24+1u2

130=-4 +1u2=-3u2

u2= -90 cm
 Therefore, when the magnification is 1/4 the object distance should be -90 cm.
