Detailed Solution

The major burden of the taxes was on the Third Estate. It comprised the ordinary population, including peasants, artisans, landless labourers, servants, doctors, lawyers, administrative officials, and traders. No privileges were enjoyed by this population.
All members of the third estate were ultimately required to pay taxes to the government. These included several indirect taxes that were imposed on common household items like salt and tobacco, as well as a direct tax known as taille. The Church also levied a tax on the peasants known as tithes.
