The major position of the Balkans was under the Ottoman empire.
A new threat arose in the south as the various Balkan governments fought to control the region. Finally, the Ottoman Turks captured Adrianople in 1362. This marked the start of their lengthy, century-long invasion of the Balkan Peninsula. Following the Battle of Kosovo in 1389, Serbia, Bulgaria, Constantinople, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia in 1463, Montenegro in 1482, and Bulgaria in 1396 all fell. Orthodox ethnic divides and the even wider gulf between Western and Eastern Christians made the conquest easier.
