The majority of the landed aristocracy was made of Peasantry.
However, the powerful aristocracy included a relatively tiny number of people. Peasants made up the vast majority of the population. In contrast to Eastern and Central Europe, where serfs farmed the majority of the land, the main portion of the land in the west was farmed by tenants and small landowners. The expansion of industrial trade and manufacturing in Western and parts of Central Europe resulted in the establishment of towns and the emergence of commercial classes whose existence was based on producing for the market. Though industrialisation started in England in the second half of the eighteenth century, it did not happen until the nineteenth century in France and several of the German states.
