The major social group or the majority community of Sri Lanka, an island nation that is the southern neighbor of India, is the Sinhala speakers. The division is based upon language. People belonging to the Sinhala linguistic group are followers of Buddhism. The Constitution of Sri Lanka also mentions the protection and propagation of the religion.
