The Malwa Plateau has black soil. Black soil is found in the Deccan trap region to the northwest Deccan plateau.  The Krishna and Godavari valleys in the south also have black soil deposition. The Malwa plateau is a part of the peninsular plateau. It has the Gujarat plains to the west, the Vindhya Ranges to the south and east, and the Bundelkhand upland and Madhya Bharat plateau to the north. The plateau, with an average elevation of 500-600 meters, has the Mahi, Chambal, Betwa, Ken, and Dhasan rivers flowing through it.
