Detailed Solution

The Maratha kingdoms were located mainly in the western part of India. In the late eighteenth century, the British East India Company decided to curb and eventually destroy the Maratha power, which was dominant in the western part of India. The Marathas always wished to expand their rule, which was only possible by ruling from Delhi. However, their dream to rule Delhi stood shattered after their defeat in the Third Battle of Panipat, which was fought in 1761. As a consequence of the Battle, the Maratha power was divided into a plethora of states which were now ruled by different chiefs called sardars.
