The Marathas built a very effective military structure while governed by the Peshwas.
The Maratha's strategy for success was to avoid the Mughals' defended strongholds, plunder Mughal cities, and engage Mughal forces where their supply lines and reinforcements could be easily disrupted. Thus their empire increased in size between 1720 and 1761. However, the Mughal Empire's power was steadily eroded by it. By the 1720s, Malwa and Gujarat had been liberated from the Mughals. By the 1730s, the entire Deccan peninsula was acknowledged to be under the control of the Maratha monarch. Hence, he had the authority to levy Chauth and Sardeshmukhi in the entire territory.
