Before Shah Jahan's rule, the Marathas had never made an effort to leave their mark on history. Like the other Hindu castes, they were quiet peasants who didn't trouble Delhi's ruling class. They were schooled to become a diligent race that the king of Bijapur ruled. The Mughals' authority and territorial growth were something the Marathas desired to seize. In the 1720s, they took Malwa and Gujarat from the Mughals to defeat them. The 1730s acknowledged Maratha's rule over the whole Deccan peninsula. They decided to conquer more of the country after capturing the Deccan during the Deccan Wars to dominate the entire country. The Marathas conquered a significant portion of the Indian subcontinent by the 18th century.
