The Maru Raikas herded camels.
Raikas were a pastoral community that lived in the deserts of Rajasthan. Since this was a dry region, it received uncertain rainfall. On cultivated lands, harvests were irregular and fluctuated every year. Growing crops on vast stretches of land was next to impossible. So the Raikas integrated pastoralism with cultivation. During the rainy season, the Raikas of Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, and Bikaner resided in their home villages where the herds could graze the existing pastures.
