Solids have fixed shapes and fixed volumes. There is no intermolecular space between particles of solid. Intermolecular forces are the attractive or repulsive forces that act between neighbouring particles (atoms, molecules, or ions ). 

When compared to intramolecular forces, such as covalent or ionic bonds between atoms in a molecule, these forces are weak. The higher the intermolecular attraction between the particles of a solid, the more difficult it is to melt.
