Detailed Solution

The methods used to separate impurities present in water are sedimentation, decantation, filtration, and evaporation.
Sedimentation, decantation, and filtration are the processes to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid. In sedimentation, the insoluble solid settles at the bottom of the container and the clear liquid rises up. This clear liquid is poured out into another container, and this process is called decantation. In filtration, the mixture is passed through the filtering device. The insoluble solid is retained on the filter paper, and the clear liquid passes through it. The process of evaporation can separate the soluble impurities. The water changes into water vapour leaving behind the impurity dissolved in it.
