The arachnoid is the middle thin avascular meninx of the three cranial meninges that surround and protect the brain. The name ‘arachnoid’ is because of its spider’s web-like arrangement of delicate collagen fibres and some elastic fibres. The meninx primitiva is formed during the third week of foetal development. As the CNS continues to develop, the meninx primitiva differentiates into three layers: the pia mater, the arachnoid, and the dura mater. It is the only meninx in fishes.
