Detailed Solution

The modern period in India began in 1707 with the death of  Aurangzeb. The demarcation between the mediaeval and modern periods is marked by the incidence of the death of a Mughal ruler. The last powerful ruler of the Mughal empire was Aurangzeb. He died in the year 1707. He was succeeded by weak rulers. After his death, the Mughal empire began to disintegrate. Several successor states emerged. Moreover, on account of weak rulers, the Britishers also gained power and began to expand their rule in India. James Mill divided the periods of Indian history into three- Hindu, Muslim, and British. In this context, the death of Aurangzeb is regarded as the period which marked the ending of the mediaeval period and the initiation of the modern period.
