The Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College, Aligarh, was founded by Sayyid Ahmed Khan. It later came to be known as the Aligarh Muslim University. Muslims were given access to modern education at this university, including Western science. Syed Ahmad Khan believed that pragmatism must replace dogmatic orthodoxy in order for Muslim civilisation to advance. He believed that the best way to better the lot of Indian Muslims was through contemporary education. He called for European science and technology to be studied by the Muslims along with the Quran.
