Richard March Hoe got rid of the outdated flatbed press and mounted the type on a rotating cylinder, a design that would later become the Hoe rotary, or "lightning," press, which was patented in 1847. The Philadelphia Public Ledger utilised it for the first time in 1847, printing 8,000 sheets per hour on one side. The New York Tribune was the first to adopt the Hoe web perfecting press, which was subsequently refined and produced 18,000 sheets an hour printed on both sides. Publishers were able to meet the rising demand for newspapers because of Hoe's press.
