Detailed Solution

The most important port on the west coast of India for trade was Surat. It was the leading port for exports till the eighteenth century. It was controlled by the local merchants and traders of India. The Dutch and English trading companies started dealing with the port of Surat in the 17th century. The port was well connected with the Gulf countries and the ports on the Red Sea. However, the port of Surat declined by the end of the 18th century. As the British established colonial rule in India, the port of Surat declined. The Britishers established the port of Bombay, controlled by English traders on the western coast.
