The most powerful among the Mahajanapadas was Magadha.
During the later Vedic period, the tribal organisations gradually evolved into territorial identities, and the settlement areas developed into Janapadas or states. Eventually, these Janapadas combined to become the 16 Mahajanapadas. The places where people settled or a tribe gained a foothold were called Janapada. There were 16 of these Mahajanapadas in the Indian subcontinent. They were either ruled by kings or Ganasanghas. The Mahajanapadas with the most clout was Magadha. Magadha rose to become the most powerful Mahajanapada in around 200 years. It was traversed by rivers like the Ganga and Son, which gave water, enhanced transportation, and helped to make the country productive. Numerous strong leaders have ruled Magadha, including Bimbisara, Ajatasattu, Mahapadma Nanda, etc. These kings made sure to conquer the other janapadas to expand the size of their kingdoms. For a long time, the capital of Magadha was Rajagriha, or what is now Rajgir in Bihar. Over time, Pataliputra, or modern-day Patna, rose to prominence as Magadha's capital.
