Slavery was abolished throughout the French empire in 1794, thanks to the French Revolution. The eradication of slavery in the French colonies was one of the most significant social reforms of the Jacobin regime. Under the leadership of Maximilien Robespierre, slavery was legally abolished in France and her colonies. It was completed on February 4, 1794. Slavery received little criticism in France throughout the 18th century. Long arguments raged in the National Assembly over whether human rights should be extended to all French subjects, including those in the colonies. It did not pass any laws, fearing opposition from businesspeople whose livelihoods were dependent on the slave trade. Finally, in 1794, the Convention decreed the abolition of slavery in all French overseas territories. However, this did not endure long. Napoleon re-established slavery in 1804 after a decade and it was eventually abolished in French colonies in 1848.
