Detailed Solution

The most serious source of nationalist tension in Europe after 1871 was an area called the Balkans. By the latter part of the nineteenth century, nationalism had lost its idealistic liberal democratic attitude of the earlier decades and had evolved into a constricting dogma with constrained goals. Nationalist groups developed a growing intolerance for one another throughout this time and a constant readiness for violence. In turn, the main European countries used the nationalist ambitions of the European subjects to achieve their own imperialist objectives. The Balkan region became Europe's main cause of nationalist unrest after 1871. The Balkans were a geographically diverse region with a variety of ethnic groups that included modern-day Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Serbia, and Montenegro.
