Shah Jahan was addressed as the royal architect by his chronicler. During Shah Jahan's reign, Mughal architecture reached stellar heights. Different elements of Mughal architecture adopted by his ancestors were harmoniously combined by him. During Shah Jahan's reign, there was an increase in construction activity in Agra and Delhi. He carefully planned the design of ceremonial halls (diwan-i Khas o am) for public and private audiences. The courts spread across large courtyards and were referred to as forty-pillared halls or chihil sutun. Shah Jahan built audience halls such that they resembled a mosque. The pedestal on which his throne sat was referred to as the qibla when in reality, Muslims used the word to indicate the direction they faced during prayers. These architectural features suggested the king represented God in the mortal realm.
