Detailed Solution

The correct Answer: (b) Shah Jahan, the fifth Mughal Emperor, who ruled from 1628 to 1658. He is remembered as one of the greatest patrons of architecture in Indian history. Shah Jahan is famous for constructing many magnificent buildings, the most notable being the Taj Mahal in Agra and the Red Fort (Lal Qila) in Delhi.

Shah Jahan decided to shift the Mughal capital from Agra to Delhi and commissioned the construction of the Red Fort in 1638. The fort took around ten years to complete and was finished in 1648. Built mainly of red sandstone, it became the new seat of Mughal power and a symbol of their grandeur. Inside the fort are beautiful palaces, gardens, halls of audience, and the famous Rang Mahal, which reflect the richness of Mughal art and design.

The Red Fort is not only a historical monument but also a symbol of India’s sovereignty today. Every year, on 15th August (Independence Day), the Prime Minister of India hoists the national flag at the Red Fort and delivers the nation’s address. Because of its historical, cultural, and political significance, it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Thus, the Red Fort stands as a lasting legacy of Shah Jahan’s reign and his architectural brilliance.
