The Mughal Empire broke into several autonomous regional states during the eighteenth century.
The powerful zamindars, subadars, and governors of expansive provinces increased their power as the Mughal emperors' dominance weakened. The Mughal states of the eighteenth century can be broadly split into three distinct groups: First, The former Mughal provinces of Awadh, Bengal, and Hyderabad. However, the leaders of these states maintained their official links with the Mughal emperor despite being powerful and relatively independent. Secondly, the territories, including numerous Rajput principalities called Watan Jagirs, had significant freedom from the Mughals. Finally, the United States was ruled by Marathas, Sikhs, and other ethnic groups, like Jats, who had gained independence from the Mughals following a prolonged violent conflict.
