Detailed Solution

The Mughals preferred to be considered Taimur's successors. Genghis Khan and Taimur were the ancestors of the Mughals on both their father's and mothers' sides, respectively. Genghis Khan, a Mongol emperor whose domain spanned parts of Central Asia and China, died in 1227 and was infamous for his mass executions of unarmed civilians. Therefore, the Mughals did not want to be associated with the bad name of the Mongol emperor. Because of this, they detested being referred to as Mongols. They wished to be identified with Taimur, the king of modern-day Turkey, Iran, and Iraq. However, Taimur's successful attempt to take Delhi in 1398 before he passed away in 1404 was one of the reasons the Mughals were proud of their Timurid origin and pedigree.
