Detailed Solution

The name of the compound having molecular formula C4H9COOH is pentanoic acid.
Valeric acid, also known as pentanoic acid, is a straight-chain alkyl carboxylic acid with the formula C4H9COOH. It has an unpleasant odor, as do other low-molecular-weight carboxylic acids. It is found in the Valeriana officinalis perennial flowering plant, which gives it its name. The compound is Pentanoic acid as it contains five carbon atoms and since –COOH group is attached at the end of the compound hence the functional group present in it is acid and thus it behaves like an acid.
