The name of energy obtained from sea or ocean water due to the difference in temperature at the surface and in deeper sections of these water bodies is called ocean thermal energy.
The surface water of the ocean is heated by the Sun's energy. Surface water can be much warmer than water in the deep. This temperature difference is used to produce electricity. The system uses this temperature difference to run a turbine to produce electricity. Warm surface water is then pumped through an evaporator. The vaporised fluid runs a turbine or generator. In a condenser, the vaporised fluid is turned back into a liquid by the cold ocean water pumped from deeper into the ocean.
The water on the surface gets heated due to exposure to sunlight, while the lower surface of the water is comparatively colder.
