The National Archives of India came up in the 1920s.
The main reason for setting up the institution was the British emphasised the need for managing official records. Moreover, the officials wanted all the documents to be managed effectively and efficiently so that no chance of discrepancies would be left behind. The Imperial Records Department was also established for the same purpose, in which records were maintained systematically. Sir Edwin Lutyens designed the National Archives of India in 1926.
