The National Assembly resolved in April 1792 to wage a war on Prussia and Austria. People from around the area in thousands raced to join the army. People saw it as a popular uprising against the rulers and aristocracies of Europe. The Marseillaise, written by the poet Roget de Lisle, was among the patriotic songs they chanted. It was named after the volunteers from Marseilles who initially performed it as they marched into Paris. The Marseillaise is currently France's national anthem. People suffered losses and economic troubles as a result of the revolutionary battles. While the men were fighting at the front, women were left to juggle the responsibilities of earning a living and caring for their families.
