The Third Estate representatives assembled on June 20, 1789, in the indoor tennis court's hall of the Versailles grounds, under the direction of Mirabeau and Abbe Sieyes. They declared themselves a national assembly and swore to stick together until a French constitution had been created to limit the monarch's power. The French people were getting angrier and angrier every day for various reasons, including a rise in the demand for food grains and a steady rise in the price of bread.
