  • The net force imposed on an object when two forces are acting in opposing directions is equal to the difference between the two forces.
  • Forces applied on an object in the same direction are added to one another whereas the forces exerted in the opposite direction are subtracted from each other.
  • For example, in the following image, 40N and 8 N are acting in the same direction therefore, they will be added to each other. Therefore, the force exerted from the left side will be 40 + 8 = 48 N.
  • Since the force exerted from the right side is opposite to the force exerted from the left side, they will be subtracted from one another.  Therefore, the net force will be 48 - 32= 16 N.
