A lot of tribes and social classes were integrated into a caste-based society and given the title of "jatis". As the economy and societal demands increased, it was necessary to have new divisions. Within varnas, smaller castes, or jatis, began to develop. The Brahmanas, for instance, saw the emergence of new castes. The Brahmanas also recognised specialised craftspeople like smiths, carpenters, and masons as separate jatis. Instead of varna, jatis formed the foundation for social organisation. To control its members' behaviour, Jatis established its own rules and regulations.
