The Ngarrindjeri were people of Australia. The absence of cultivation in a particular area does not make it an uninhabited place. When white settlers first landed in Australia, they saw vast areas of uncultivated land. So, naturally, they called Australia terra nullius or empty. The various aboriginal communities in Australia lived in demarcated territories. The Ngarrindjeri people of Australia marked their land parallel to their first ancestor Ngurunderi’s symbolic body. Their land was distinguished by five environments: riverine tracts, salt water, lakes, desert plains, and bush. Each of these could satisfy a particular socio-economic need of the inhabitants.
