The nineteenth-century indenture is also called a new system of slavery. Indentured labour means bonded labour under a contract, where the worker is provided with a passage to a country by the employer in the place of labour for a specified period. But the workers were often duped by the agents with false information. For example, they were not informed about long sea journeys. Sometimes the migrants were even abducted. The plantations had conditions worse than what the migrants had signed up for. These migrants wanted to escape the poverty in their home countries, but instead, they got involved in another kind of bonded labour with even fewer rights.
