Detailed Solution

The nobility was part of the second estate of French society. There were three estates in France. The first estate consisted of clergy who mainly performed functions in the church. The state exempted them from paying the taxes. The second estate of nobility had certain privileges by birth. The state also exempted them from paying their taxes. The third estate consisted of peasants, artisans, landless labourers etc. The state made them pay all the taxes. The nobles also held feudal privileges. They also demanded payments from the peasants, known as feudal dues. Peasants were required to provide services to the lord by working in his home and fields, enlisting in the army, or helping to construct roads.
